Anyone looking for advice on how to improve the SEO of their site (Search Engine Optimization) is likely to be told at some stage to make use of bookmarking sites, and with good reason – such sites are a powerful tool when it comes to increasing your pages SERPs (Search Engine Results Position – where the page appears in a search engine when someone does a search).

But what often fails to get covered when giving such advice is WHY bookmarking sites are so important for SEO. How do they help and why should people spend time bookmarking?

Publicity to webmasters. It should be remembered that the people using such bookmarking sites are often very technically (and internet) savvy. Such individuals will often run their own websites – and if they are clicking on the link it means they have an interest in the topic that you are covering.

This means that the people following links from social bookmarking sites are people who could well own a website within the same niche as you – and could therefore very easily link back to your page or article if they like what they read and want to bring it to the attention of their own readers.

As we have sen such links are important to SEO, and will also drive targeted traffic from other websites.

Now by no means is bookmarking the only SEO that you should be doing. Other factors such as keywording articles, interlinking etc are just as important. But bookmarking is a very powerful SEO tool and a vital link in improving the SEO of your site and a must in any backlink building campaign.

Remember though that it is not just you that should be bookmarking sites – it is vital that you allow your readers an easy way of bookmarking it for themselves on the various sites and services available. This way you improve the chances of the site going viral and traffic and SEO being increased greatly without your input.
