Timing your Bookmarking: It's vital to know the best time to post to bookmarking sites

The Best Time to Post to Social Bookmarking Sites

In almost all walks of life there is one cliché that holds true – timing is everything.  This not only holds true for posting to social bookmarking sites, it is far more important than many people realize.

Social bookmarking sites are like all websites in that they have peaks and troughs of traffic at certain times of the day.  As any bookmark you place is only likely to stay at the top of any list for a few hours this makes the time that you post the bookmark vital when it comes to getting the most possible people viewing it.

When is best to post the bookmark?

So if it is so important that you post your bookmark at a certain time, when is best?  That is a hard question to answer, as obviously every niche is different... but by observing general trends and figures a trend emerges.

Firstly social bookmarking sites tend to get far less traffic on weekends than weekdays (which is, in the main, the same for other websites).  This means you should be looking to post the bookmark on a weekday if you want to get it seen by the most people possible.

Assuming that you are targeting US traffic, which is by far the largest traffic source of the English speaking world, then you should be looking at posting between 10am and 3pm or 8pm and 11pm Eastern Time.  These are the times that the social bookmarking sites are at their busiest traffic wise.

This is because a large number of US workers are now able to access the internet from work – and many people like to spend at least a few moments browsing their favorite sites in between work projects.  Similarly by 8pm most people are home and are looking to destress and 'switch off', meaning they turn to entertainment portals like TV's and the internet.

Beware!

This is not an exact science, nor is it true for every niche and every traffic audience.  All this has been extrapolated from general trends rather than figures specific to your niche.

You should be testing your own audience to established what times work best for you.  For example if you work in a local niche, or on a niche that only effects certain areas, it could well be that Eastern Time is not a timezone you should be interested in.

Similarly it could be your traffic is busier at other times.  Sports traffic is notoriously busier on weekends than weekdays, whilst many sites and niches that involve sound of some kind (music, TV clips etc) are better suited to evenings than afternoons as people are often unable to listen whilst they are at work – either through no speakers or fear of getting caught by the boss!

So make sure that you are testing what time is best to post to social bookmarking sites for yourselves.  Our guidelines should act as a very good starting point, but don't let that be the only research you do for it.
